Some homes simply have a feeling. 88 Jewett Avenue is one of them. Built in 1884 and filled with the kind of character that simply can't be recreated, this historic Jersey City rowhouse has evolved beautifully while holding onto the details that make it so special. Wide-plank and original wood flooring, stained glass, exposed brick, beautiful architectural details and historic fireplace details tell the story of the home's past, while incredible natural light brings warmth to nearly every corner. The main living level is where this home really comes to life. A light-filled living room flows into the dining room and kitchen, creating spaces that feel just as right for quiet mornings as they do for long dinners with friends. The kitchen blends character with modern convenience, featuring a SMEG refrigerator, Cafe double-oven gas range, Bosch dishwasher, butcher-block counters and classic tilework. And then there are all the little places that make this house feel like home- a front balcony for morning coffee or a good book, an upper deck for dinner outside, a lower deck for entertaining, and beyond it all, a lush private backyard that feels like a hidden retreat in the middle of the city. At its heart is a mature fig tree, one more piece of a home that feels as though it has stories to tell. Upstairs, three bedrooms and a full bath with heated floors offer a peaceful retreat, while the lower level adds tremendous flexibility for a den, studio, office or recreation space, along with a second full bath and dedicated laundry area. Mini-split heating and cooling installed in 2022, radiator heat via gas boiler, a water heater installed June 2025, updated electrical panel with two subpanels, and a sump pump and French drain bring modern comfort and practicality to this 19th-century home. There's a story behind the address, too. Jewett Avenue was named for William Jewett, a noted American portrait painter, and 88 Jewett was part of a row of eight townhouses documented on an 1887 Jersey City fire map. It's a small piece of Jersey City history that adds another layer of character to a home already full of it. The location is just as special. Set in McGinley Square, 88 Jewett is tucked between the neighborhood's restaurant and cafe scenes along Bergen and Monticello Avenues, with Citi Bike right at the corner and Journal Square PATH approximately a 20-minute walk away- giving you neighborhood life right outside your door with easy access to the rest of Jersey City and NYC. It's charming, timeless and completely its own- the kind of place that makes you want to stay awhile.
