At the tip of historic Hancock Point, where Frenchman Bay opens to an extraordinary panorama of Mount Desert Island, the Porcupine Islands and Cadillac Mountain, stands a remarkable piece of Maine's coastal history. Built circa 1881 by Bangor attorney William Doane, this enchanting Victorian cottage dates to the earliest years of Hancock Point's summer community. According to the Hancock Historical Society, Doane was the law partner of Mr. Boardman, who built the neighboring cottage. Original woodwork, inviting living spaces, a fireplace and wraparound porch recall another era, while approximately 1,431 square feet offers four bedrooms and one-and-a-half baths, providing wonderful space for family and summer guests. Yet even nearly 145 years after the Doane family first gathered here, the view remains the property's defining feature. From its exceptional position on Hancock Point, the cottage looks across Frenchman Bay to the Porcupine Islands, Mount Desert Island and the unmistakable summit of Cadillac Mountain. Morning light over the water, islands seemingly suspended in the bay, passing boats and the mountains beyond create a panorama that is difficult to capture in photographsa€”and even harder to forget once experienced. Hancock Point remains a treasured coastal community steeped in history and generations of summer tradition. This is more than an opportunity to purchase waterfront property. It is an invitation to become the ne
