From the mid-1750s through the 1920s, Brockton was a center for shoe manufacturing. This is not where the history of Brockton ends; it was also the birthplace of the electric powered street railway in 1884 and turned on by Thomas Edison himself. Hamilton Wade Douglas House, formerly the Hamilton Wade Shoe Factory, has been renovated into 84 spacious one and two bedroom apartment homes designed for the comfort and convenience of the elderly, including a limited number of specially designed apartments for the handicapped. Here the charm of the old has been gracefully blended with the convenience of the new to create a truly distinctive apartment community. On a sunny day, you may find the residents lounging on the gazebo, or on one of the many benches on the property, or you may find them enjoying the attractively landscaped grounds from the spacious solarium. If they are not at home, they may be enjoying one of the cultural events in the neighborhood, including the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, located within a mile of Douglas House and accessible by public transportation. With its local history and hometown feel, Hamilton Wade Douglas House offers affordable senior housing with all the amenities of the city, but all the comforts of the suburbs. Hamilton Wade House is located on the Brockton Area Transit (BAT) bus lines and is within a mile of the BAT terminal and a commuter rail station that has a South Station destination. Museums, shopping and restaurants are all close by, but with the beautifully landscaped grounds, complete with benches and a gazebo, you may never want to leave!
